The Cove Palisades State Park, Between Redmond and Madras, Oregon

Just a short post because I'm paying for Internet use by the minute - I'll write more later offline and paste it in a post.

The kids and I are fine and staying in this gorgeous Oregon State Park on our (unexpected) way to Portland.  Petunia Smart Car arrived at the Mercedes Benz authorized Smart Car service this morning after a ride on a truck carrier.  They probably won't even look at her until Monday so I'm taking my time getting to Portland.

If anybody knows of good places to stay in Floribunda while waiting for the repair work to be completed, Petunia is in south-west Portland right near Willamette River.  More to come later.

  1. I have been without internet for a week and just got caught up with your blog. Sending you lots of hugs. It will all get sorted out in the end and you will be on your way again. Just be thankful that this is happening in the US rather than Mexico.

  2. Check with the Dealer when you get to Portland.
They may let you boondock on their lot and may even have WiFi you could use. We did that at a Mercades Benz Dealer in Canada for a night.

  4. Champoeg State Park isn't to far from Portland or I-5. Hope everything turns out all right for you.

  5. Glad that everyone is ok except poor Petunia. I hope that it isn't anything to serious and that she will get fixed up promptly without hurting your pocketbook too much.

  6. Camping World RV store in Wilsonville, just slightly south of Portland on I-5 allows boondocking in their lot. Best of luck sorting stuff out.

  7. Mary-Pat, Have followed your blog since you met GEorge in Mexico. I am a retired pilot that has pulled a car behind a MH since 1970. All of my tow-cars experienced one or more of the troubles you are having with the Smart. Do keep the wheels unlocked. To lock them will cause severe damage. When towing, do use a bungee cord to keep just enough pressure on the steering wheel to cause a centering force for the front wheels but also permit left or right turning when required. If the wheels go to either side full stop they will stay in that position, as you well know. Thus the severe damage. My present tow-car, a Honda, has to have the radio disconnected from the battery or it will run down a new battery in about 2 hours while towing with the ignition unlocked. I installed an on-off switch from the radio fuse box to the "dash board" to easily take the radio out of the fused line while towing. Problem solved. Any good mechanic can do any of these things for you. Hang in there and keep on keepin' on. Doug and Dee Boswell kw0k@arrl.net

    1. Are you able to bring a tow vehicle and your motor home into Mexico in your name? I have been told that one person can only bring one vehicle.

    2. Hi Mary-Pat,

I am having trouble publishing my comment hope it works this time. I am so sorry you are having this trouble. If the MB dealership you are using is on Naito Parkway, it is essentially downtown Portland. It will not have much parking area and parking in Portland downtown can be a challenge. You may want to consider parking outside the downtown area and taking public transit to the dealer. Transit is very good in Portland. It is also common to see vans and small RV's parked on neighborhood streets. There is an RV park in Jantzen beach which is 6-8 miles or so North of downtown Portland just off of I-5. From there I believe you would also be able to take transit into town. Also, I often see folks taking their dogs on the buses and trains around Portland, however, I am not sure what the exact rules are about that. Beyond services animals, it may depend on the kindness of the driver. Wish I had a driveway and more than a small apartment to offer you refuge. Good luck to you with your repairs and future travels.

  9. Hi Mary-Pat...
I sent you an email to your Gmail address with my email and phone number. I'm sorry to hear about your car I been having a few RV is using my own. I'm going to Portland tomorrow to pick up a part at an RV place. If your car is going to be in the shop for a while you might think about staying in Lincoln City at the casino. no hookups but it's free and you can see the ocean from the parking lot. Call me I hope we get to meet!

  10. HI Cheryl:
Read my catch-up posts. I'm at Milo McIver SP, 25 miles from Portland. I'll know more tomorrow about what's up and I think we very well might be able to meet. I could be talked into Lincoln City fairly easily for a respite after this experience.

  11. and encouragement. To all Anonymous Commentaries I'm sorry for the trouble you may be having with posting comments. I had to change some things because I was getting so much Phishing and erroneous garbage comments.
I'm at McIver State Park for tonight and then I'll decide where I need to go tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions on places to park. I lived in Lake Oswego eons ago and don't feel at all familiar with Portland in the 21st century!
